Chapter 31 - The Clarke Family

The Clarke family is important here because of Alice Irene Bird, who married James Henry Livingston.  As you read through this chapter, notice two sad wedding days.

Walter Clarke  had three children:

From Ireland to Pennsylvania

Samuel Clarke, son of Walter Clarke,  was born in Grange, County Antrim, Ireland.  He was married to Mary Lightfoot  (See Chapter 32) in New Garden, Chester County, Pennsylvania, on August 6, 1727, at which time he was living in Marlborough, Chester County, Pennsylvania. He was received into the Newark or Kennett Monthly Meeting of the Society of Friends on August 4, 1729. 

Children of  Samuel Clarke  and Mary Lightfoot  were:

  • Sarah Clark  (born January 23, 1741, became second wife of Daniel Hetner )

William Clark , son of Samuel Clarke  and Mary Lightfoot , was born February 6, 1739 in Ireland and emigrated to America as a young man.  He first settled in New Jersey, where he married Hannah Lloyd  (born in Scotland) on May 1, 1766.  Later they moved to Pennsborough, Pennsylvania, and still later they moved near Hughesville in Wolf Township, Pennsylvania. 

Children of William Clark  and Hannah Lloyd  were:

    A Soldier in the Revolution

    Gabriel Clark , son of William Clark  and Hannah Lloyd , was born March 13, 1769, in Pennsborough (now called Muncy), Lycoming County, Pennsylvania.  He moved to Wolf Township near Hughesville, Pennsylvania, about the time the Revolutionary War ended.  He was a member of Captain Cornelius Waldron’s  Company of Militia, Third Battalion of Northumberland County, which was commanded by Colonel William Hepburn  during the American Revolution.  In 1795, Gabriel Clark  married Mary Hilborn

    Gruel and Linsey

    Samuel Hilborn Clark , son of Gabriel Clark  and Mary Hilborn , was born February 14th, 1799.  His family was very poor, so he was put out at an early age.  He knew little of a father’s care or a mother’s love.  He often spoke of the hardships he endured, and he often had to live on gruel, a soup made of burnt meal and water.  At the age of fourteen, he was bound as an apprentice to Samuel  and Jonathan Rogers , to serve them seven years in their woolen mill.  In exchange, he received board and clothing.  The clothing was one linsey (a coarse cloth made of linen and wool) suit, a pair of flax pants, a cap, a hat and a pair of shoes per year.  As a young man, he followed the lumber business in Loyalsock Township, but later, he purchased 354 acres of land about three miles north of Huntersville in Plunketts Creek Township.  Samuel Hilborn Clark  married Elizabeth Lambert (August 17, 1801-1866, born in Bristol, England, daughter of Samuel Lambert ) .   They were married in July, 1820, in Forksville in Sullivan County, Pennsylvania, where their first two children were born.  In 1825 they moved to Muncy Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, and in 1841 or 1842 they moved to Plunketts Creek Township.  Samuel Hilborn Clark  was injured in the Fall of 1854 while building a dam, and he died October 20, 1854.  Elizabeth Lambert  died December 24, 1866 in Linden, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, and lies buried in Emery's Cemetery.

    Descendants of Samuel Hilborn Clark  and Elizabeth Lambert

    George W. Clark, son of Samuel Hilborn Clark  and Elizabeth Lambert ,  was born July 12, 1823, in Forksville, PA, and died January 17, 1902 in Linden, Lycoming County, PA.  He lies  buried Emery’s Cemetery.

    Charles Fleming Clark, son of Samuel Hilborn Clark  and Elizabeth Lambert ,  was born 1835, Muncy Township, PA, was a Union Soldier during the War between the States, and died of remittant fever on June 18, 1865 in Raleigh, NC.  He lies buried in Raleigh, NC.

    Enoch Everingham Clark , son of Samuel Hilborn Clark  and Elizabeth Lambert ,  was born July 27, 1836, in Muncy Township, PA, and died January 20, 1915, in Huntersville, PA.  He lies buried in the Methodist Church Cemetery.

    Henry R. (Robb) Clark, son of Samuel Hilborn Clark  and Elizabeth Lambert ,   was born August 27, 1841, in Muncy Township, PA.  He was a veteran of the War between the States, Company F, 106th Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Militia, having served 15 months.  He died February 28, 1926, in Muncy, PA.

    Iron and Timber

    Samuel Lambert Clark , son of Samuel Hilborn Clark  and Elizabeth Lambert ,  was born April 24, 1828, in Plunketts Creek Township, Pennsylvania.  He started work for William McKinney  at his new iron furnace at age 15, and learned the puddler’s trade.  [A puddler is a worker in an iron mill who refines pig (cast) iron into less-brittle wrought iron.]  He stayed with McKinney for seven years, after which time the furnace closed.  Later he engaged in lumbering, renting land until 1861, when he bought 83 acres. 

    War, Politics, and Sunday School

    In 1865, Samuel Lambert Clark  enlisted in Company D, 51st Pennsylvania Volunteers and served until the end of the war.  Samuel Lambert Clark  was a Whig, but became a Republican at the formation of that party, and then became an independent.  He served the township for 8(?) years, 3 years as Supervisor, and six years as School Director.  He was a member of the Methodist Church of Linden, PA, and was superintendent of the Sunday School.  He was always a man of broad views, an enterprising and progressive citizen.

    On May 9, 1848, he married Catherine Whipple, daughter of William Whipple  of Woodward Township.  Catherine Whipple  was born August 31, 1830, and died October 11, 1900.  Samuel Lambert Clark died in 1908.

    Margaret Jane Clark, daughter of Samuel Lambert Clark  and Catherine Whipple , was born February 6, 1848, in Plunketts Creek Township, PA, and died January 10, 1873.

    Sarah Elizabeth Clark, daughter of Samuel Lambert Clark  and Catherine Whipple , was born October 15, 1852.  She was engaged to John Casner  who died of appendicitis the day of the wedding.  Sarah Elizabeth Clark died in 1923.

    Charlotte Ann Clark , daughter of Samuel Lambert Clark  and Catherine Whipple , was born February 13, 1859 in Woodward Township, Lycoming County, Pennsylvania, and died February 26, 1936, in Williamsport, PA.  She married William Joseph Bird  on October 25, 1874, in a ceremony conducted by George B. Appleman  (William’s stepfather).  William Joseph Bird  was born December 10, 1856, in Sterling, PA, and died September 2, 1925, in Williamsport, PA.

    Parents of William Joseph Bird  (above) were Joseph A. Bird  and Sarah Elizabeth Noack .  Joseph A. Bird  was born January 11 or June 4, 1829.  He married Sarah Elizabeth Noack  in 1853 in Moscow, PA, and he died December 10, 1858, in Moscow, PA.  Sarah Elizabeth Noack  was born September 29, 1832, in Madison, PA, died December 30, 1924, and lies buried in Bear Brook Cemetery.

    William Collins Bird  (born June 2, 1900, died August 20, 1981, Williamsport, PA)

    Joseph Lambert Bird , son of William Joseph Bird  and Charlotte Ann Clark , was born October 26, 1877 in Pine Run, PA.  He died November 13, 1877, in Linden, PA.

    George Thomas Allen Bird , son of William Joseph Bird  and Charlotte Ann Clark , was born October 22, 1878, in Forksville PA.  He died May 15, 1934, Williamsport, PA.

    Sarah Catherine Bird, daughter of William Joseph Bird  and Charlotte Ann Clark ,, was  born March 29, 1881, Forksville, PA.  She died October 12, 1968, in Williamsport, PA.

    Samuel Lambert Byrd , son of William Joseph Bird  and Charlotte Ann Clark , was born August 10, 1883, in Williamsport, PA.  He died January 13, 1955, in Williamsport, PA.

    Friend John Clayton Bird , son of William Joseph Bird  and Charlotte Ann Clark , was born April 12, 1889, in Williamsport, PA.  He died in June, 1961, in Williamsport, PA, and lies  buried Montoursville, PA.

    Alice Irene Bird , daughter of William Joseph Bird  and Charlotte Ann Clark , was born February 7, 1886 in Williamsport, PA.  She married James Henry Livingston  (See Chapter 30) on September 15, 1908 in Williamsport, PA, in a ceremony conducted by Reverend Fosselman.  Alice Irene Bird  died December 3, 1974, in Williamsport, PA.
