Chapter 28 – The Bourgeois Family

The ancestry of Aureline Bourgeois  can be traced back seven generations, beginning with Jacques Bourgeois .  It’s important to us because Aureline Bourgeois  married Bienvenu Guidry .

Jacques (or Jacques dit Jacob) Bourgeois, also known as Middle-Class Jacques, was born in Coupvrai-en-Brie, France on January 28, 1620 or 1621.  He came to Acadia as a surgeon with Governor Charles D’Aulnay  in 1642 in a fleet of four ships.  About 1644 in Port Royal, Acadia, he married 14-year-old Jeanne Trahan , born in France in 1629.  She had come to Acadia in 1632 with her father, who was an armorer, a maker of weapons and knives.  Governor Charles D’Aulnay granted Jacques Bourgeois  some land, so he became both a farmer and a surgeon.  He also founded Beaubassin (now Amhearst), Acadia, for his children, but he may never have resided there himself.  Jacques Bourgeois  would later serve as lieutenant of the garrison at Port Royal under Germain Doucet , and he also found time to be a marine merchant, with boats operating up and down the coast. Jeanne Trahan  died after 1686 in Acadia, and Jacques Bourgeois  died in 1701 in Port Royal, Acadia.  Among their ten children was Charles Bourgeois .

[There is some confusion about Jacques Bourgeois .  Many researchers say it was Jacques’ father, also named Jacques, who was the surgeon.]

Jeanne Trahan ’s  father, the armorer, was Guillaume Trahant , born in France in 1611, and died about 1682 in Port Royal, Acadia.  Her mother was Francoise Charbonneau , born about 1615 in St. Etienne, De Cjimon, France.  After Francoise Charbonneau  died in Port Royal in 1655, Guillaume Trahant  married Marie Magdeleine Brun , who was born January 25, 1645, in Port Royal, and also died in Port Royal. Guillaume Trahant  was the son of Nicolas Trahan  and Renee Desloges .

Charles Bourgeois , son of Jacques Bourgeois  and Jeanne Trahon, was born in Port Royal, Acadia, about 1646.  About 1670 in Beaubassin, Acadia, he married Anne Dugas  (or Dugast), born about 1654 in Port Royal.  The Acadian census of 1671 indicates that Charles Bourgeois  and Anne Dugas  owned “a dozen cattles and seven sheeps.”  Among their children was a son, also named Charles BourgeoisCharles Bourgeois  (the husband) died about 1678 in Beaubassin, Acadia. Anne Dugas  was the daughter of Abraham Dugas , born in 1616 in St. Anne Auray, Brittany.  He was an armorer who turned plowman, and in 1671 he had sixteen arpents of land.  Anne Dugas’ mother was Marguerite Louise Doucet .  After the death of Charles Bourgeois , Anne Dugas  married (on April 26, 1679) Jean-Aubin “dit Chatillon” Mignot .  Jean-Aubin “dit Chatillon” Mignot died in Quebec City, Canada, on September 5, 1712, and Anne Dugas  died November 4, 1740 in Beaubassin, Acadia.

The second Charles Bourgeois  was born in Port Royal, Acadia, in 1672.  He married Marie Blanchard , born in 1674 in Port Royal, Acadia, died after 1748.  In 1707 they owned 8 arpents of land, 15 cattle, 20 sheep, and 12 hogs.  Their son was Pierre Bourgeois .

Marie Blanchard , above, was the daughter of Guillaume Blanchard  (b. ca 1650) and Huguette Gougeon  (b. ca 1657, Port Royal, Acadia), who were married about 1672. Guillaume Blanchard  was the son of Jean Blanchard  (b. ca 1611 in Martaize, France, d. in Port Royal, Acadia) and Radegonde Lambert  (b. ca 1613 in France, d. in Port Royal), who were married ca 1642 in Port royal, Acadia.

Pierre Bourgeois  was born in 1699 in Beaubassin, Acadia.  On August 18, 1722, he married Marie Francoise Cormier , born about 1706 in Beaubassin, Acadia, daughter of Pierre Cormier  and Catherine LeBlanc . Among the eight children of Pierre Bourgeois and Marie Francoise Cormier was Jean Baptiste Bourgeois .

Jean Baptiste Bourgeois  was born February 4, 1732.  He married first (on February 15, 1757 in Pt. Lejoye, Isle St. Jean) Marie Magdeline Bourg , born about 1737.  They had six children, including Amand Alcide BourgeoisMarie Magdeline Bourg  died about 1775, and Jean Baptiste Bourgeois  married second (on February 20, 1776, in St. James, Louisiana) Osite Anne Melancon .   Jean Baptiste Bourgeois  died in 1816 in St. James Parrish, Louisiana.

Amand Alcide Bourgeois , son of Jean Baptiste Bourgeois  and Marie Magdeline Bourg , married (on November 27, 1792 at St. James Church, St. James, Louisiana) Scholastique Arceneaux, daughter of Joseph Arceneaux  and Marie Bergeron . . Amand Alcide Bourgeois and Scholastique Arceneaux had five children, including Amand BourgeoisAmand Alcide Bourgeois  died in November, 1805 and lies buried in St. James Cemetery.

Amand Bourgeois , son of Amand Alcide Bourgeois  and Scholastique Arceneaux , was born July 22, 1794.  On April 14, 1817, he married Hortense Gaudin  at St. Michael Church in Convent, Louisiana.  They had sixteen children, including Aureline BourgeoisAmand Bourgeois  died November 5, 1853.

Hortense Gaudin , above, was the daughter of Bonaventure Gaudin  (b. 1753) and Marie Broussard  (d. August, 1827, St. James Parish, Louisiana). Bonaventure Gaudin  was the son of another Bonaventure Gaudin  (b. 1715) and Marquerite Bergeron  (b. 1723), who were married ca. 1740.   Marie Broussard  was the daughter of Athanase Broussard  and Anne Bourgeois.

Aureline (or Oreline or Aurelina) Bourgeois, daughter of Amand Bourgeois and Hortense Gaudin, was born in Louisiana about 1833 , and died June 23, 1916.  She married Bienvenu Guidry  (See Chapter 26) on April 16, 1853 at St. Michaels Church in Convent, Louisiana.
