Chapter 18 – The Allens
Chapter 18 begins in Upstate
New York, and ends in Georgia with Lucy Allen, who married William
Biswell Johnson.
The Allens from Kingsbury
Seth Allen was born
August 10, 1779, in England. On Aug 21, 1803, at Kingsbury, New York, he married Lucy
King (See Chapter 19), born May 8,
1786. Seth Allen died August 7, 1825, and lies buried in the
King Cemetery at Kingsbury, New York. Lucy King died November
23, 1834.
Their children were:
- King Allen (Oct. 21, 1804 – Dec. 24, 18??)
- Samuel Allen (March 10, 1806 - )
- Susannah Allen (Feb. 25, 1808 - )
- David Allen
- Lysander Allen (July 20, 1811 - )
- Margaret Allen (Sept 1, 1813 - )
- Martin Allen (June 27, 1815 – Jan 31, 1840)
- Solomon Allen (Nov. 15, 1816 - )
- Jerusha Allen
- Infant Daughter July 23, 1819 – Sept 1, 1819)
- Seneca Allen (Jan 21, 1821 - )
- Hannah Jane Allen (Born April 15, 1823, married William F. Burlingame)
- Seth Allen (April 26, 1824 - )
Jerusha Allen,
daughter of Seth Allen and Lucy King, was born February 11, 1818. She
married Joshua Covey, and they lived in Kingsbury, New York. In 1858,
Joshua Covey was convicted of raping their daughter. He was sentenced
to life imprisonment in Clinton Prison, but after twenty years, his sentence
was commuted to time served.
David Allen, son of
Seth Allen and Lucy King, was born December 10, 1809. On
November 20, 1839 at Syracuse, New York in a ceremony performed by Reverend
Mr. Adams, he married Emeline Prudence Parker , who was born in
Oneida County, New York, July 6, 1812. Her parents may have been Joel
Parker and his wife Lydia. Joel Parker died May12, 1862, and was buried in
Oneida Castle Cemetery in Vernon, New York, and Mrs. Parker died
three days later.
The Allens Move to Georgia
In November, 1839, David
and Emeline Allen moved to Georgia. Emeline was a Baptist, but joined the Methodist
Episcopal Church because there were no Baptist churches convenient to
their new home in Georgia. She was somewhat deaf. David Allen was a carpenter,
joiner, and millwright who maintained a sawmill during
construction of the Central of Georgia Railroad from Macon to Savannah,
Georgia. The Central of Georgia was chartered as the Central Railroad
and Canal Company of Georgia on December 20, 1833, and was originally conceived to haul
cotton to Savannah for export. The line from Macon to Savannah was completed
in 1843. By 1850, Georgia had more miles of track than any other Southeastern state,
and Macon was the transportation hub of Central Georgia. David Allen
also maintained a bridge over Echeconnee Creek during the War between
the States, and he owned a mill. David Allen died August 2, 1864,
of erysipilas at his home near Macon, Georgia. He was buried in his own yard, because there was no way
to transport him to an existing cemetery. Most horses and mules from
the neighborhood had been taken for service in the Confederate Army.
Emeline Prudence Parker died April 18, 1876, at the home of her
son-in-law, William Biswell Johnson, and lies buried beside her
husband in Bibb County, Georgia . Emeline Prudence Parker fell and broke her hip
and did not walk during the last four years of her life.
The Neighbors Capture a Yankee
Soldier
In accordance with the custom of the times,
when David Allen died, his neighbors sat up all night with the
corpse. A straggler from the Union Army came to the house where David
Allen was. Even though David Allen and Emeline Prudence
Parker were from the North, the neighbors captured the straggler and
sent him to Andersonville Prison. This straggler must have been from
Union General George Stoneman’s calvary. Stoneman had planned a raid
on Macon and the Confederate prison camp at Andersonville, but the raid
was a disaster for the Union calvary. Stoneman and about 700 of his men
were captured on July 31, 1864. Stoneman was later exchanged for a Confederate
general, and afterward was involved in several more battles.
Children of David Allen and Emeline
Prudence Parker , all girls, were:
- Mary
Jane Allen (Jan 12, 1841 – October 6, 1919)
- Adelia
Allen (Jan. 14, 1844 –Oct. 4, 1874)
- Irene
Allen (Sept. 4, 1845 – Feb. 7, 1876)
- Emeline
Allen (May 4, 1847 – Jan 11, 1925)
- Lucy
Allen (Dec. 4, 1848 –Mar 16, 1930)
- Lydia
Allen (July 5, 1851 – Oct. 19, 1851)
Mary Jane Allen, married Moses Jones (March 22, 1831-December
16, 1889) at Deerfield, Livingston County, Michigan, on July 26, 1866.
Adelia Allen, daughter of David Allen
and Emeline Prudence Parker , married John Holden October 16,
1870 in New York.
Irene Allen, daughter of David
Allen and Emeline Prudence Parker , married Frederick C.
Waite July 26, 1868 in Bibb County, GA.
Emeline Allen, daughter of David
Allen and Emeline Prudence Parker , married William Thomson
in Houston County, GA, Feb 14, 1869. Apparently, she later married a
Mr. Bussey .
Lucy Allen, daughter of David Allen
and Emeline Prudence Parker , was born in Bibb County, GA, December
4, 1849 (or 1848). Lucy Allen became a Methodist at the age of
thirteen. She taught school in Vienna, GA, and married William Biswell
Johnson (See Chapter 17) on
October 22, 1871. In her old age, she became senile. One day
she attempted to set the family home on fire, using the family Bible as
kindling. Someone put the fire out and saved the Bible. After that,
Lucy Allen was put into the state mental hospital at Milledgeville,
Georgia, where she died April 6, 1930. Her body was shipped home
by rail for burial. Newspaper obituaries say she died at her family home
on March 16, but this is not true. Apparently, the family was embarassed
by the fact that she died in a mental institution.
