Chapter 10 - Descendants of Pepin I, King of Italy

The royal families of Europe are inter-related in a variety of ways.  This short chapter is a bridge chapter, showing one way that the Bourchiers and Plantagenets of Chapter 8 are descended from Charlemagne.

Pepin I  “the Short” (See Chapter 24) was a son of Charlemagne  and his first wife, Hildegard .  He was born in Prussia in April, 773, baptized by Pope Adrian I and crowned King of Italy, or Lombardy, in 781.  He married Bertha of Toulouse (ca 777-after 797), daughter of William of Toulouse, in 795 .  Among their children were Bernhard , King of Italy, and five daughters.  Charlemagne planned for Pepin to inherit one third of his kingdom, but Pepin the Short died January 8, 810, predeceasing his father.

Bernhard  was born about 797 in Normandy, France.  In 813, his grandfather, Charlemagne, crowned him King of Italy.  That same year, he married Kunigonda (Cunegonde) , (797-ca 835).  Among their children was Pepin II Seigneur , Count of Peronne.  Bernhard died January 17, 818 in Milan, Italy, the result of being blinded on order of his uncle, Emperor Louis I “the Pious” (See Chapter 24)Bernhard probably deserved some sort of punishment – he led a revolt against his uncle in 817.

Pepin II Seigneur, Count of Peronne, was born in 817.  Among his children was Poppa (Papia) de SenlisPepin II Seigneur died about 892 in Milan, Italy.

Poppa (Papia) de Senlis, daughter of Peppin II, was born in 848.  She married Robert (Rollo) Ragnvaldsson , Duke of Normandy (See Chapter 9), about 886 or 891.
