Chapter 8 – The Dutton Family

Chapter 8 ends with Lady Eleanor Dutton , who married Robert Needham , an ancestor of “our” Bryan family.  This chapter also includes Peter (Piers) Dutton, who was an ancestor of the Booth family and Edwina “Dicey” Malinda Booth

Richard de St. Saveur was the father of Neil de St. Sauvier.

Neil de St. Sauvier I was the father of Roger de St. Sauvier.

Roger de St. Sauvier was the father of Neil de St. Sauvier II.  

Neil de St. Sauvier II  was born about 1000 AD in France, and according to some scholars, he is the first of this line who can be documented.  He married Adela d’ Eu , and their children included Richard de St. Sauvier  and Ivo Viscount of Cotentin .

Ivo Viscount of Cotentin was born about 1026 in Normandy, France.  About 1042 he married Emme, Countess of Bretange , in Normandy, FranceEmme was born about 1026 in Bertange, Normandy, France, the daughter of Count Geoffrey of Bretange  and his wife Hedwige . Count Geoffrey of Bretange  was the son of Richard I Sanspeur, 3rd Dude of Normandy, and his second wife, Gonnor de Crepon (See Chapter 9)Odard  was a son of Ivo Viscount Of Cotentin and Emme, Countess of Bretange.

Odard (or Hodard) , first Lord of Dutton, was born in Normandy, France, about 1046.  He and his five brothers came into England with their great uncle, William the Conqueror,  and settled at the town of Dutton, a large part of which was given to him by Hugh Lupus , Earl of Chester.  About 1066 in Chester, England, Odard married Alice Dutton , and Hugh Fitzodard , Lord of Dutton, was their son.  Descendants of Odard and Alice took the name of Dutton as their surname.  Odard’s sword became a family heirloom.

The name “Dutton” is from the Saxon word duntune, which means, “town on a hill.”

Hugh Fitzodard , Lord of Dutton, was born in Cheshire, England, about 1096.  About 1127 in Cheshire, England, he married Alice Pichard .  Alice Pichard was born about 1106 in Cheshire, England, the daughter of Nicholas Pichard .  Hugh de Dutton was the second Lord of Dutton and was the son of Hugh Fitzodard and Alice Pichard . Hugh Fitzodard died in 1130 in Cheshire.

Hugh de Dutton , son of Hugh Fitzodard , Lord of Dutton and Alice Pichard , was born in Cheshire, England, about 1128.  He married Alice Prescott , who was born about 1132 in EnglandHugh de Dutton became the third Lord of Dutton.

Hugh Dutton , son of Hugh de Dutton  and Alice Prescott , was born in Cheshire, England, about 1152.  He became the 4th Lord of Dutton.  About 1170, he married Isabell de Massey , born in Lindsey, England, about 1155.  Their son was Hugh Dutton , 5th Lord of Dutton.

Hugh Dutton , 5th Lord of Dutton, was born about 1172 in Cheshire, England,  He married Muriel le Despencer, daughter of Thomas le Dispenser, about 1211 in Cheshire, England. When Hugh and Muriel married, her father gave Hugh the town of Bollington in Maxfield hundred, Cheshire.  Hugh Dutton built Poosey Chapel.  Muriel le Despencer was born about 1181 in Cheshire, England.   Hugh Dutton , 5th Lord of Dutton, died after 1234.   

Thomas de Dutton , 7th Lord of Dutton, was the son of Hugh Dutton  and Muriel le Despencer .  He was born about 1214 in Cheshire, England, and he married Phillippa de Standon , born about 1220 in Standon, England, daughter of Vivian de StandonThomas de Dutton  inherited Dutton at the death of his brother, Hugh.  He became Sheriff of Cheshire, and died about 1272.  Children of Thomas de Dutton  and Phillippa de Standon were Margaret Dutton  and Hugh de Dutton .

Hugh de Dutton , 8th Lord of Dutton, was the son of Thomas de Dutton  and Phillippa de Standon .  He was born about 1251 in Cheshire, England.  About 1271 he married first Margaret de Risley  (ca 1254 – before 1275) in Cheshire.  Hugh de Dutton  married second Joan de Saint Peter  about 1275.  Hugh built a foot-bridge at Acton for the abbot of Vale-Royale.  Hugh died in 1294 in Cheshire, England.

Hugh de Dutton , 9th Lord of Dutton, was the son of Hugh de Dutton  and Joan de Saint Peter .  He was born December 8, 1276, in Cheshire, England, and Christened on December 9, 1276, in Great Budworth, Cheshire, England.  He married first Isabella Massy , and second Joan (Jane) de Holand  in Lancashire, England.  Joan de Holand was born in 1290 in England, the daughter of Sir Knight R. de Holand (born ca 1253) and Elizabeth de Salmesbury (born in 1256 in England).  Hugh de Dutton  died in 1326, and Joan de Holand died after 1347.

Thomas Dutton , 10th Lord of Dutton, was born in 1314 in Cheshire, England, the son of Hugh de Dutton  and Isabella MassyThomas was knighted in 1326, and he was keeper of Haulton Castle.  He married first Ellen (Eleanor) Thornton , daughter of Sir Peter Thornton  and Lucia Hellesby  (Helsby), about 1334, and he married second Phillippa Thornton . Ellen (Eleanor) Thornton  was born in 1316 in Thornton, Cheshire, EnglandThomas Dutton  died May 4, 1381.

Edmund Dutton , son of Thomas Dutton and Ellen (Eleanor) Thornton , was born about 1341 in Cheshire, EnglandEdmund married Joan (Jenett) Minshull in Cheshire, England, in 1366.  Joan Minshull was born about 1340 in Lords Church, England, the daughter of Henry Minshull  and Tibota de PulfordEdmund Dutton  and his wife, Joan Minshull , owned the manors of Church Minshull and Ashton.  Edmund Dutton  died after 1381 in Cheshire, England.  Children of Edmund Dutton  and Joan Minshull  included Hugh Dutton (see below) and Peter (Piers) Dutton (See Chapter 5), so the Carsons are descended from Edmund Dutton  two different ways.

Hugh Dutton , son of Edmund Dutton  and Joan Minshull , was born in Cheshire, England, in 1369. Hugh married first Petronell de Vernon  about 1398 in Cheshire, England. Hugh became Sheriff of Cheshire.  Petronell de Vernon  was born in 1383 in Cheshire, England and died after 1431. Hugh Dutton married second Emme Warren .  Hugh died in 1440.

John Dutton , son of Hugh Dutton  and Petronell de Vernon , was born in Cheshire in 1399.  He became Mayor of Chester in 1451.  John married Margaret Atherton , daughter of Sir William Atherton  and Elizabeth Pilkington , about 1427 in Atherton, England. Margaret Atherton  was born about 1410 in Atherton, England and died in 1454.  John Dutton  died after 1461.

Sir Knight Peter Dutton  was born in 1428, the son of John Dutton  and Margaret Atherton .  He married Elizabeth Grosvenor , daughter of Robert Grosvenor  and Janet (Johanne) De Chedell , in 1464. Elizabeth Grosvenor  was born in 1430 in Hulme, Cheshire, England and died after 1469.

Peter Dutton , son of Sir Knight Peter Dutton  and Elizabeth Grosvenor , was born in Cheshire, England, about 1465.  He married Elizabeth Fouleshurst , daughter of Sir Knight Robert Fouleshurst , about 1479 in Crewe, Cheshire, England. Elizabeth Fouleshurst  was born about 1454 in Crewe, Cheshire, EnglandPeter Dutton  died before April 8, 1502, and after his death, Elizabeth Fouleshurst married Thomas Leicester..

Piers Dutton , Lord of Dutton, was the son of Peter Dutton  and Elizabeth Fouleshurst .  He was born in Cheshire, England, about 1497.  He married Eleanor Legh  about 1500 in Adlington, Cheshire, England, and they had at least ten children. Eleanor Legh  was born about 1480 in Adlington, Cheshire, England, and after her death, Piers Dutton married Julian Poyns.  Piers Dutton  died August 17, 1545.

Hugh Dutton  was born about 1502 in Cheshire, England, the son of Piers Dutton  and Eleanor Legh .  He married Jane Booth , daughter of Sir Knight William Booth , in 1521 in Dutton, Cheshire, EnglandJane Booth  was born in 1500 in Barton, England and died in 1569 in EnglandHugh Dutton  died before 1545, before his father, in EnglandHugh and Jane had two children, John and Anne.  Anne Dutton  married Christopher Holford , son of Jane Booth’s second husband.

Jane Booth, above, was a sister of John Booth, who married Margery Dutton, daughter of Piers Dutton and Eleanor Leigh.

John Dutton , son of Hugh Dutton  and Jane Booth , was born in 1538 in Cheshire, England.  He married Elinor Calveley , daughter of Hugh Calveley  and Elinor Tattenhall , in 1560 in Lea, Cheshire, England. Elinor Calveley  was born about 1540 in Lea, Cheshire, EnglandJohn Dutton  died January 30, 1608.

Thomas Dutton , son of John Dutton  and Elinor Calveley , was born in Cheshire, England, in 1568.  He married Thomasine Anderton  about 1593 in Anderton, EnglandThomasine Anderton  was born about 1567 in Anderton, England.  She married first John Singleton  of Stany, Lancashire, second Thomas Dutton, and third Anthony St. John .  Thomas Dutton  died about December 29, 1614, and was buried at Great Budworth, Cheshire, England.  He willed Odard’s sword, which at that time had been in the family at least 500 years, to Sir Gilbert Gerard.

Lady Eleanor Dutton , Vicountess of Kilmorey, was the daughter of Thomas Dutton  and Thomasin Anderton .  She was born in Cheshire, England, in 1596.  She married first Gilbert Gerard, and second Robert Needham  (See Chapter 7) on October 31, 1636.  Lady Eleanor Dutton  died March 12, 1666, at age 69.
