Chapter 4 - The Abercrombies

The Abercrombies are related to the Carsons through Sarah Abercrombie, who married Thomas Raines.

Ancestors in Medieval Scotland

William De Abercrombie was born in 1270 and died in 1296. His son was John Abercrombie .

John Abercrombie was born in 1296 and died in 1340. He married Ferquhard of Caithness , and they were the parents of Humphrey Abercromby.

Humphrey Abercrombie was born in Harthill in 1315 and died in 1340. His son was Alexander Abercrombie .

Alexander Abercrombie was born in 1340 in Petmathen. His son was David Abercrombie .

David Abercrombie was born in 1360. In 1381 he married Mararet De Leslie , and they were the parents of John Abercrombie . David Abercrombie died in 1398.

John Abercrombie was born in 1398 in Petmathen. He married in 1418 (spouse unknown), and they were the parents of Humphrey Abercrombie . John Abercrombie died in 1430.

Humphrey Abercrombie was born in 1430 in Petmathen, and he married in 1450 (spouse unknown). He was the father of Alexander Abercrombie , and he died in 1472. Some researchers say that Humphrey was the son of Thomas, Earl of Mar.

Alexander Abercrombie was born in 1451 in Petmathen, and he married Agnes Johnston (1472? – 1484) in 1478. They were the parents of a son, also named Alexander Abercrombie .

Alexander Abercrombie was born in 1484 in Petmathen, and died in 1506. He married first Janet Ogilvy , born in Deskford. Alexander Abercrombie married second Marjorie Mowat , but she had no issue. Alexander Abercrombie died in 1506.

George Abercrombie (ca 1501-1552) was born in Pitmedden, Scotland. The various lands previously owned by his father were consolidated into the Barony of Pitmeddin and chartered on February 18, 1512. In 1519, George Abercrombie married first Christian Barclay , who was born in Gartly in 1519. He married second Margaret Gordon. George Abercrombie died in 1552.

James Abercrombie, son of George Abercrombie and Christian Barclay, was born in Pitmedden. He married first Marjory Hay (See Chapter 6) who was born in Errol, and they were the parents of four sons and two daughters. James Abercrombie married second Elizabeth Gray of Schwas, but she had no children. He succeeded his father in Pitmedden in 1549.

Alexander Abercrombie was born in 1510 in Pittmedin, Ardin, Abershire, Scotland. He married Elizabeth Lesley (or Leslie) of Pitcaple , born in 1513. Note that the birth dates of Alexander and Elizabeth are both before Alexander’s grandparents were married, so something is almost certainly in error here. Note also that some say Alexander Abercrombie married second Margaret Leslie of Halquhain, and their children were Hector Abercrombie and Adam Abercrombie .

Alexander Abercrombie, son of Alexander Abercrombie and Elizabeth Lesley, was born in 1535 in Balguehain, Ardin, Abershire, Scotland. In 1556 he married Margret Lesley , born in 1535 in Pitcale. Their son was James Abercrombie . Alexander Abercrombie died May 12, 1593. Note: Some say this Alexander Abercrombie married first Marjorie Ogilvy of Findlater, and second a daughter of Gordon of Sutherland.

James Abercrombie, son of Alexander Abercrombie and Margaret Lesley, was born in Ley, Scotland, in 1557. He was heir of Birkenbog, and he married Margret Ogilvy . They were the parents of Sir Alexander Abercrombie . Some say this husband of Margaret Ogilvy was named Alexander, not James.

The Grand Falconer of Charles I

Sir Alexander Abercrombie, son of James Abercrombie and Margaret Lesley, was born in 1578 in Birkenbog, Scotland. He was the Grand Falconer of Charles I . In 1602 in Birkenbog, he married Elizabeth Benton , born in 1580 in Balfour. They were the parents of:

Baronet and Member of Parliament

Sir Alexander Abercrombie, son of Alexander Abercrombie and Elizabeth Benton, was born in 1604 (or 1608) in Birkenbog, Banff, Scotland, and he died in 1684. He was the first Baronet of Birkenbog, and he was created Baronet of Nova Scotia on February 20, 1636. (This was a money-making scheme. There were 122 barons of Nova Scotia made before 1639. The barons had to pay for their titles.) He was a member of Parliament from Banfishire and opposed King Charles I . He married first Jean Urquhart of Cromerty, second Jean Sutherland, and third (on August 22, 1668) Elizabeth Baird, daughter of Sir James Baird of Auchmedden . After the death of Sir Alexander Abercrombie, Elizabeth Baird married Colonel Patrick Ogilvie .

Attorney General of South Carolina

Sir James Abercrombie, son of Sir Alexander Abercrombie and Elizabeth Baird, was born in 1683 in Fife, Scotland. He was the second Baronet of Birkenbog. In 1720 he emigrated to South Carolina, but he also kept his home in Scotland and visited back and forth. He was British Attorney General in South Carolina in the period 1728-1742, and he was influential in redefining the dividing line between North and South Carolina. From 1736 to 1739 he owned Royal Land Grants. He was one of twelve patriarchs of the First or Scotch Presbyterian Church in Charleston, SC. In 1705 in Fife, Scotland, he married Mary Gordon , who was born in Stralock, Scotland in 1687, daughter of Sir Arthur Gordon . They were the parents of:

Too Old to Fight?

Robert Abercrombie, son of Sir James Abercrombie and Mary Gordon, was born in 1715 in Banff, Scotland. He married Jane Gresham , born in 1717. He was the third Baronet of Birkenbog. In 1740 he emmigrated to Bath County, Virginia. By 1757, he was in Orange County, North Carolina, and at the Council of New Bern on May 22, 1757, he was commissioned Justice of the Peace for Orange County. He served in that capacity from 1757 until 1778. One source says he was a Revolutionary War soldier; another says he was too old for military service, but he rendered aid as a patriot, partly by supplying horses. Robert Abercrombie died May 31, 1779 in Hillsboro, NC.

A Revolutionary Soldier who Helped Found Sparta

Charles Abercrombie , son of Robert Abercrombie and Jane Gresham, was born March 4, 1742, in Bath County, Virginia (now Orange County, NC). He owned a store in Orange County, and Governor Tryon ’s army passed by the store on its way to quell the Regulator uprising at the Battle of Alamance (See Chapter 15). Governor Tryon stopped in and bought twelve axes from Charles Abercrombie.

Charles Abercrombie was a appointed Justice of the Peace in Orange County, NC, in 1776, and First Captain in the Hillsboro District of the North Carolina Line in 1778. By 1780 (or 1781) he had been promoted to Major of the 3^rd North Carolina Regiment, and he received a bounty of land in Hancock Coujty, Georgia as a reward for his service in the Revolution. During the war, Charles Abercrombie erected a large fort which was intended for the free use of his friends. Also in 1781, he was a member of the Hillsboro District Board of Auditors. He was a member of the committee that ratified the United States Constitution in 1788, and he was a founder of Sparta, Georgia, where he divided 83 of his own acres into lots. He built the Manor House. He also built the Eagle Tavern, where LaFayette attended a ball in 1825, and which burned in 1830. On December 18, 1769, in Mecklenburg, NC, he married Edwina Dicey Malinda Booth (born October 6, 1751 in Mecklenburg County, NC, see Chapter 6), daughter of John W. Booth . Charles Abercrombie died August 23, 1819, in Hancock County, GA, and his funeral sermon was preached by Reverend Daniel Duffy . Edwina Dicey Malinda Booth died in September, 1804.

Anderson Abercrombie, above, was a friend of the Creek Indians, and they did not molest him or his family when hostilities broke out. He enlisted as a private in the War of 1812 and rose to the rank of adjutant general. He fought at the Battle of Camp Defiance and was wounded at the Battle of Calebee. He represented Hancock County, GA, in the legislature. In his early thirties, he moved to a large plantation in Russell County, Alabama. He died at the home of his son-in-law, Judge Howard, in Wynnton, GA. The date of his death is variously given as February 21, 1867, and June 20, 1859.

James Abercrombie, above, commanded the Montgomery, Alabama, troops in 1817, and they served as the welcoming committee for Lafayette when he toured Alabama. In 1849, he was proprietor of a hotel, Montgomery Hall, in Montgomery, Alabama. James Abercrombie served in tha Alabama Legislature and in Congress. He died July 2, 1861 in Pensacola, Florida, and his remains were brought to Columbus, Georgia, for burial.

Sarah Abercrombie was born January 29, 1775, in Orange County, NC. She married Thomas Raines (See Chapter 2) about 1790 . When she died in Upson County, GA in 1842, her possessions included slaves, horses, mules, other livestock, corn, fodder, oats, plantation tools, blacksmith tools, a wagon, oxen and an ox cart, a cotton gin, and a wheat thrasher.
