Chapter 3 - The Goodwin Family

The Goodwin family is related to the Carsons through Amy Goodwin Mitchell, who married John Raines.  It is interesting to note that Goodwin is sometimes spelled with an “i”, and sometimes with a “y”, and sometimes the same person spelled his own name both ways.

Ancestors in England

William Goodwyn  was born in 1470 in Buckingham, England.  He married about 1498 in Buckingham.  His sons were:

  • John Goodwin
  • Blasé Goodwin
  • (Perhaps) Theophilus Goodwin, Sr .

[Note:  At least one source uses the term, “Bucks And London”, everywhere another source uses “Buckingham”.  The location of Bucks And London in unknown to the present author.  Bucks is a suburb, or section, of London.  It was the home of William Penn, and the namesake of Bucks County, Pennsylvania.]

John Goodwin , son of William Goodwyn, was born about 1500 in Buckingham, England.  He married his wife, Katherine -----,  about 1528 in Buckingham.  Katherine was born about 1508.  Their children were Sir John Goodwin  and Henry Goodwin , both born in Buckingham.

Henry Goodwin, son of John Goodwin , was born in Buckingham, England, about 1530.  He married ----- Moore about 1560 in Buckingham, and Robert Goodwin  was their son.

Robert Goodwin , son of Henry Goodwin and ----- Moore , was born about 1565 in Buckingham, England.  He was a merchant of Westminster and Tower Streets.  He married Jane Dollin, daughter of Anthony Dollin,  in Flanders, Belgium, about 1585, and Peter Goodwin  was his son.

Peter Goodwin , son of Robert Goodwin , was born in Buckingham, England, about 1579, and died in London October 28, 1660.  He was a salter in London, that is to say, he was a salt merchant.  Since neither refrigeration nor canning had been invented in the 17th century, salt was very important for the preservation of meat.  Salt was a precious commodity, and Peter Goodwin probably made a comfortable living selling salt.  He married Sarah Hellard  about 1609 or 1611 in Buckingham, and James Goodwin  was his son. Sarah Hellard  was born about 1590, the daughter of John Hellard and his wife, Sarah. John Hellard was a merchant in London.

Coming to Virginia

Major James Goodwin , son of Peter Goodwin , was born about 1618 in London, England, and died in 1678 in York Parish, Virginia.  He married first Rachel Porter  (born 1630, Warwick, England, died May 23,1666, daughter of John Porter of Norwich County, England) in London.  Some sources say they were married in 1647 in York Parish, Virginia, and that she was born about 1618 in London.  Another story about Rachel is that she was sickly, the last of several maidens brought to Virginia to become wives of the men who had settled there.  Regardless of where she was born, she died May 23, 1666 in Back Creek, York County, Virginia.  James Goodwin and Rachel Porter had six children, four boys and two girls.  The four boys were born in London between 1635 and 1646, and the two girls were born in York Parrish, Virginia, between 1649 and 1655.  Major James Goodwin  married second Blanche Morce  or Elizabeth Parry about 1668 in York Parrish, Virginia, and their only child was Martin Goodwin , born about 1670 in York Parrish, Virginia.  Some researchers say Robert Goodwin’s mother was Blanche, not RachelJames Goodwin’s will was probated on January 6, 1678 or 1679.

James Goodwin  came to Virginia in 1650, received land grants in Virginia in 1657 and 1658, and served in the Virginia House of Burgesses 1657-1662.  He purchased land at a place now known as Dandy from Samuel Chew, heir of John Chew, in 1660, and subsequently built an impressive two-story home facing Goodwin Island at Dandy. When he learned his father had died, James Goodwin made a visit to England in 1661, and returned to Virginia in 1662.  He was a plantation owner, raising mostly corn and tobacco on 1200 acres.  Peter Goodwin (see below) inherited the property in 1731.The house was torn down in the early 1900’s.

Children of James Goodwin and Rachel Porter were:

  • Robert Goodwin
  • John Goodwin
  • Peter Goodwin  (married Rebecca Tiplady, inherited property at Dandy)
  • Matthew Goodwin
  • Susannah Goodwin (married John Duke, Jr.)
  • Elizabeth Goodwin

Matthew Goodwin , son of James Goodwin  and Rachel Porter , was born about 1646 in London, England.  The names of his wives are unknown.  He married his first wife in England, and they had two sons, Thomas Goodwin  and Matthew Goodwin .  Thomas Goodwin ’s second wife was born about 1655, and they married about 1670 in York Parish, Virginia.  They also had two sons, Peter Goodwin  and John Porter Goodwin .

Thomas Goodwin , son of Matthew Goodwin  and his first wife, was born in 1675 in Cambridge, England.  He married first Martha Jones  about 1695 in Surry County, Virginia.  She was born about 1677 in Virginia.  Thomas Goodwin  married second Mary, perhaps Mary Harrison,  about 1714 in Surry County, Virginia.  All six of Thomas Goodwin ’s children were born in Surry County, Virginia, between 1696 and 1715.  Thomas Goodwin was a mariner.  At his death in February, 1730, or October, 1731, in Surry County, Virginia, Thomas Goodwin owned land and slaves in Surry and Prince George Counties, Virginia.

Children of Thomas Goodwin and Martha Jones were:

  • Thomas Goodwin
  • John Goodwin
  • Amy Goodwin
  • Penelope Goodwin (born after February 7, 1711, married Thomas Taylor)

Children of Thomas Goodwin and Mary ----- were Francis Goodwin  and William Goodwin .

John Goodwin  (or Goodwynne), son of Thomas Goodwin  and Martha Jones ,  was born in 1699 in a portion of Surry County, Virginia, which is now in Sussex County, Virginia.  He was a planter.  About 1730, he married Winifred Tucker  in Virginia.  Winifred Tucker  was born September 20, 1710 in Virginia, and Winifred and John had six children, all born in Surry County, Virginia, between 1730 and 1752. Winifred Tucker  died May 4, 1758.  John Goodwin moved to Craven County, South Carolina, about 1764 where he died in 1775.

Children of John Goodwin and Winifred Tucker were:

  • Amy Goodwin (see below)
  • Robert Goodwin (born March 15, 1739, in Surry, Virginia)
  • James Goodwin (born August 16, 1741, married Judith Thweatt )
  • William Goodwin (born Januray 24, 1745)
  • Frances Goodwin (born November 7, 1747)
  • Martha, or Patty, Goodwin .

Robert Goodwin, son of John Goodwin  and Winifred Tucker, settled in Saxagotha Towndhip, South Carolina, where he was a tax collector and justice of the peace.  He served in the first Provincial Congress from his district and was a captain in the third regiment of the Continental Line.  He resigned in 1778, but later was a colonel in the South Carolina militia.

Winifred Tucker , above, was the daughter of Joseph Tucker  and Martha “Patsey” Coleson .   Joseph Tucker was born about 1685, probably in Barbadoes.  He became a captain in the English navy.  He and his wife came to Virginia prior to 1760, and settled on the James River.  Later, he went to Prince Edward county, where he died May 22, 1768.  (Some say he died in Dinwiddie, Virginia.)  He was the son of Robert Tucker  and his wife, Martha.

A Connection to President Thomas Jefferson

Winnifred Tucker, above, had a very round-about connection to President Thomas Jefferson .  Winnifred’s brother was Joseph Tudor Tucker , and he married Lucretia Wynne .  Lucretia Wynne was the daughter of Robert Wynne  and Martha Jefferson .  Martha Jefferson was the daughter of Thomas Jefferson  (1640-before December 1, 1697, not the President) and Mary Martha Branch . Thomas Jefferson and Mary Martha Branch were also the parents of another Thomas Jefferson  (December 7, 1679-February 18, 1730, still not the President), who married Mary Field .  Thomas Jefferson and Mary Field were the parents of Peter Jefferson  (February 19, 1706-October 13, 1757, owned Shadwell Plantation in Goochland County, Virginia), who marrried Jane Randolph .  They were the parents of President Thomas Jefferson  (April 13, 1743-July 4, 1826).

Martha “Patsey” Coleson, above, was born November 13, 1698, and died August 28, 1757, in Virginia.  She was the daughter of Isaac Coleson  and his wife, Winnifred.

Amy Goodwin  was the daughter of John Goodwin  and Winifred Tucker .  She was born August 31, 1732 in Surry County, Virginia.  She married first Thomas Mitchell , and their only child was Thomas Mitchell, Jr., who was born May 8, 1756, in Sussex County, Virginia, married Ann Raines  about 1779 in Prince George County, Virginia, and died July 26, 1826, in Thomas County, Georgia. Thomas Mitchell died in January, 1761, so Amy Goodwin  married second Captain John “Jim” Raines  (See Chapter 2) on October 15, 1762, and, according to one account, she died at 10:00 pm on Thursday night, August 31, 1773, at the birth of her daughter, Amy Goodwyn Raines (married Robert Stewart, died October 7, 1840).
