Appendix XIII

Time Line of Selected Events

As you read through the following dates of selected events, there are a few of them that are key to understanding the migration of these families.

Of course, there’s the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus in 1492.  Without his discovery, none of our ancestors (with the exception of a few native Americans) would have come to America.

In rapid succession came the colonization of Acadia by the French in 1604, the Plantation of Ulster by the English in 1606, the settlement of Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607, and the landing at Plymouth, Massachusetts, in 1620.

In 1755, the British gained control of Acadia as a result of the Seven Years war, and began the dispersal of French-speaking Acadians.

Our Jackson relatives will be interested in two events from 1771: the Battle of Alamance, and the death of Pastor Shubal Stearns.  These events probably influenced Nathan and Edward Jackson to move west.

In 1781, Cornwallis’ defeat at Yorktown signalled the end of the American Revolution.  Many of our ancestors received grants of land in payment for their services during the Revolution.

1785 saw the Spanish government invite Acadian refugees in France to settle in Louisiana.  This was especially important to our Guidry family.

Lastly, let me mention the Treaty of Indian Spring, signed in 1825.  By this treaty, the Creek Indians ceded their land west of the Flint River to the State of Georgia, which opened areas of Macon, Dooley, Taylor, and other counties to settlement by the whites.

As you study this history, note how these events influenced the migration of our ancestors.

The selected dates are primarily the dates of events in the lives of the first known individuals of each family and the dates of significant migrations of the families, with  other dates added for historical reference.
